Raúl Asencio Handed New Court Punishment in Spain With €14,400 Fine and Eight-Month Driving Ban
Raúl Asencio, the Real Madrid defender, has been handed a court punishment in Spain following a drink-driving incident in Gran Canaria, with the case ending in a financial penalty and an eight-month driving ban.
The incident dates back to 16 August 2026, when Asencio was stopped at a traffic checkpoint in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana in southern Gran Canaria and was subjected to a breathalyser test.
According to Spanish reports, the test recorded 0.90 mg/l of alcohol in exhaled air, almost four times the legal limit for ordinary drivers in Spain, which is set at 0.25 mg/l.
Asencio admitted the facts during a fast-track hearing and accepted a €14,400 fine along with an eight-month driving ban.
Three days after the incident, the Real Madrid defender appeared before a court in San Bartolomé de Tirajana during a fast-track hearing, where he admitted the facts and accepted the punishment.
The sentence included a daily fine of €120 for four months, bringing the total to €14,400, as well as an eight-month suspension of his driving licence.
Reports indicate that the incident did not involve a road accident or reckless driving, with the player instead stopped during a preventive traffic operation in the area.
Asencio was driving a Porsche when he was stopped in the early hours of 16 August, after which one of his companions took over driving the vehicle once the police procedure had been completed.
The punishment comes at a sensitive time for the Spanish defender, who is facing a difficult period away from the pitch while attempting to continue his career with Real Madrid’s first team.
According to Spanish reports, the driving case is separate from another legal matter involving the player dating back to events in Gran Canaria during the summer of 2023.
For now, the driving-related punishment is the ruling that has already been issued, following Asencio’s admission of the incident and acceptance of the financial penalty and driving ban.
Raúl Asencio must now deal with fresh legal consequences away from football, while attention remains on his sporting future and his ability to move beyond this difficult period and refocus on the game.
Alguien debería hablar como un padre a Asencio y dejarle las cosas claras.
Un jugador del Madrid no puede estar metido en estos temas. El año pasado ya salió así de la cena del equipo.
