Bowling score calculator

Tap the pins knocked down on each ball and this bowling score calculator fills in a real score sheet: strikes and spares get their bonus balls, the 10th frame is handled for you, and you see the highest score still possible.

How to use the bowling score calculator

  1. Type a name for the first bowler. Press Add bowler for up to six people on the same lane.
  2. After each ball, tap the number of pins knocked down, X for a strike or / for a spare. The keypad only lets you press balls that are possible, so you cannot enter 7 after a 5 by mistake.
  3. With several bowlers, the calculator moves to the next person after each frame, just as you take turns at the lane. Untick the box if you prefer to enter one whole game at a time.
  4. Watch the running total and the highest possible score, which assumes every remaining ball is a strike or a spare. Tapped the wrong button? Use Undo last ball.

How to score bowling

If you have ever wondered how to score bowling by hand, the rules fit on one card. A game has ten frames. In each frame you get up to two balls to knock down all ten pins.

strike = 10 + next 2 balls · spare = 10 + next ball · open = pins knocked down

Worked example: a 201 game

Press Load example game to see this exact game in the bowling calculator above. The balls were: X, 7 /, 9 –, X, X, X, 8 1, 6 /, X, and X 8 1 in the 10th.

FrameBallsFrame worthRunning total
1X10 + 7 + 3 = 2020
27 /10 + 9 = 1939
39 –948
4X10 + 10 + 10 = 3078
5X10 + 10 + 8 = 28106
6X10 + 8 + 1 = 19125
78 19134
86 /10 + 10 = 20154
9X10 + 10 + 8 = 28182
10X 8 110 + 8 + 1 = 19201

Notice frame 4: a strike followed by two more strikes is worth the maximum 30. Frame 6 shows why an open frame right after strikes hurts: the strike only collects the 8 and 1 that follow it.

Score benchmarks

These numbers follow directly from the scoring rules, so they are useful targets when you check a sheet:

ScoreWhat it takes
300Perfect game: 12 strikes in a row
200Strike and spare in alternate frames all game (often called a “Dutch 200”)
190A spare in every frame, always 9 with the first ball, and 9 on the bonus ball
150A spare in every frame, always 5 with the first ball, and 5 on the bonus ball
100+A mark (strike or spare) in every frame guarantees at least 100
90The most you can score without a single strike or spare (9 pins every frame)

The gap between 90 and 190 shows where scores really come from: picking up spares. A bowler who converts most spares will score far more than one who knocks down a lot of pins but leaves frames open.

Tips for keeping score

How we tested it

The scoring code runs against automated Node tests. They check that 12 strikes score 300, 20 gutter balls score 0, all spares with 9 and 1 plus a final 9 score 190, all 5 / with a final 5 score 150, nine pins in every frame scores 90 and alternating strikes and spares score 200. The 201 game above is tested frame by frame against the running totals we worked out by hand. The 10th frame is tested with X X X, X 5 / and 9 / X, and the tests confirm that the game ends after an open 10th frame. Invalid balls are rejected: 6 after a 5, 11 pins, a ball after the game is over, 6 after X 5 in the 10th, a strike as a second ball and a spare as a first ball. The highest-possible score is tested too: 300 for a new game, 290 after a first-ball 9 and 279 after 9 –.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the score under a strike still blank?

A strike is worth 10 plus the pins from your next two balls, so its frame cannot be totaled until those two balls are rolled. A spare waits for one more ball. As soon as the bonus balls are in, the running total appears and every later frame catches up.

How many strikes do you need for a perfect game?

Twelve in a row: one in each of the first nine frames and three in the 10th frame. Each frame is then worth 30, which gives the maximum score of 300. Two strikes in a row are often called a double and three a turkey.

How do I enter a foul or a gutter ball?

Both count as a ball with 0 pins, so press the – (0) button. On paper a foul is written as F and a gutter or miss as –. Under USBC rules the pins knocked down on a foul ball do not count; if it was the first ball, the pins are reset and knocking all ten down with the second ball is a spare.

Why are some buttons greyed out?

The keypad only allows balls that can really happen. If you knocked down 6 pins with the first ball, only 0 to 4 or a spare are possible next. Strike is only available when a full rack of ten pins is standing, and spare only on a second ball.

Will I lose the game if I refresh the page?

No. The bowlers, their names and every ball are saved in your browser's local storage on this device, so you can close the tab and continue later. Nothing is sent to a server. Use New game to clear the sheet.
