Behind the scenes, Barcelona were dealing with another sensitive issue that forced the club to handle their Egyptian prospect with extreme caution while the transfer window remained open.

What makes the situation even more intriguing is that the player who attracted significant attention during pre-season and emerged as one of Barcelona’s leading scorers was given very little opportunity to showcase his qualities in competitive matches during the opening rounds. According to Spanish newspaper SPORT, a specific detail in his contract was at the heart of Barcelona’s concerns.

Why Did Flick Limit Hamza Abdelkarim’s Minutes?

SPORT reported that Hansi Flick reached an understanding with Barcelona’s sporting management, led by Deco, to limit Hamza Abdelkarim’s involvement in the opening competitive matches because of the low release clause in the Egyptian striker’s current contract, which stands at just €15 million.

Abdelkarim enjoyed an impressive pre-season, scoring four goals in Barcelona’s friendly matches and emerging as the team’s leading scorer during preparations for the new campaign.

However, his outstanding performances also created a potential problem for Barcelona. The club reportedly feared that another impressive display in an official La Liga match before the transfer window closed could attract interest from European clubs capable of paying his relatively low release clause.

Barcelona were not afraid of Hamza Abdelkarim shining — they were afraid he would shine at the wrong time.

According to SPORT, English clubs in particular were considered a potential threat because of their considerable financial power. Barcelona therefore preferred to handle Abdelkarim carefully until the summer transfer window had closed.

As a result, Abdelkarim did not feature against Elche or Athletic Club before being given only a few minutes against Rayo Vallecano. According to reports, his total playing time across Barcelona’s opening three La Liga matches was only around five minutes.

The situation was particularly surprising because Abdelkarim was the only natural striker in Barcelona’s squad at the time, making his limited involvement appear difficult to explain purely from a footballing perspective, especially after his impressive pre-season.

Barcelona, however, did not want to repeat the scenario created during the friendly matches, when the Egyptian forward scored four goals and became one of the team’s most talked-about young players while his release clause remained at €15 million.

With the transfer window now closed, Barcelona can move forward with their plan to protect the player. The club are working on an improved contract for Abdelkarim that would increase his release clause from €15 million to €150 million, a tenfold increase.

Reports indicate that Barcelona have already been in discussions with the player’s agent regarding a new contract as part of the club’s strategy to secure the Egyptian striker’s long-term future and protect him from potential interest from European clubs.

The move does not mean Barcelona intend to keep Abdelkarim away from the first team. On the contrary, the young striker remains involved in the first-team environment and training while also retaining his registration with Barcelona Atletic.

Once his contractual situation is secured, Flick will be able to give Abdelkarim greater opportunities whenever he believes the timing is right, without the same concerns that existed during the final days of the transfer window.

The limited minutes Hamza Abdelkarim received at the beginning of his Barcelona career therefore tell a very different story from what many supporters may have initially assumed. Barcelona were not trying to hide their young Egyptian talent — they were trying to protect him from a scenario in which his own performances could have made him available for just €15 million.

Hamza Abdelkarim’s limited involvement for Barcelona at the start of the season was not simply down to competition for places or a purely technical decision from Hansi Flick, as it initially appeared.
