Young players who have become regular names in the spotlight found themselves facing another opportunity, while another name emerged strongly after recently joining the Catalan club.

The biggest surprise is that Barcelona have three representatives in the final 30-player shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, while several prominent names from the squad were left out, raising plenty of questions about this year’s selections.

The official shortlist confirmed the nominations of Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí and Rodri for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. Yamal and Cubarsí have also been nominated for the award recognizing the best young talent of the year, while Rodri joined them after moving to Barcelona this summer.

Lamine Yamal has another opportunity to win the award after enjoying an exceptional 2025-26 season with Barcelona, contributing to more than 40 goals, with 24 goals and 18 assists in 45 appearances. He also helped the team win the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup.

Yamal’s brilliance was not limited to club football, as he also played an influential role for Spain at the 2026 World Cup, where the national team ultimately lifted the trophy. The young star has continued to strengthen his position among the best players in the world. This is Yamal’s third Ballon d’Or nomination, after he finished second in last year’s race behind Ousmane Dembélé.

Pau Cubarsí has also secured a place on the final shortlist after playing a key role in Barcelona’s defense throughout the season, gradually emerging as the team’s defensive leader despite his young age. The Spanish defender also impressed with his national team at the 2026 World Cup, where Spain conceded just one goal throughout the tournament.

Rodri adds a different dimension to Barcelona’s presence in the Ballon d’Or race. The Spanish midfielder enjoyed an outstanding World Cup with his national team, winning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. He also played a leadership role for Spain before completing his move to Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

Rodri is no stranger to this award, having previously won the Ballon d’Or in 2024, making him one of the leading contenders to claim the prize for a second time in his career.

Meanwhile, the list also saw the return of Lionel Messi, Barcelona legend and former captain, as well as an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. Messi helped Inter Miami achieve success before producing a strong campaign with Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.

However, Barcelona’s representation also came with some disappointing surprises, as club captain Raphinha was left out after enduring a difficult season due to injuries with both Barcelona and Brazil. Pedri was also absent from the final shortlist, which immediately attracted attention given his importance to the team.

The surprises did not stop with Raphinha and Pedri, as Fermín López was another notable omission, particularly after enjoying a highly productive season and winning trophies with Barcelona.

Barcelona’s trio will face fierce competition for the award, with a host of the biggest names in world football also on the shortlist, including Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos from Paris Saint-Germain, along with Bayern Munich star Harry Kane and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé.

Ferran Torres also appears on the list after leaving Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain during the summer. He enjoyed the best season of his career with the Catalan club before scoring Spain’s winning goal in the World Cup final.

Michael Olise is also among the nominees after providing 31 assists during the previous season, alongside Bruno Fernandes and Erling Haaland, underlining just how open the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or will be among the world’s top stars.

This time, the announcement was far more than just another piece of news for Barcelona fans, as the new shortlist brought major surprises involving several of the club’s biggest stars in the race for the most prestigious individual award in world football.
