Manchester United Eye Return for Alvaro Fernandez, Hold Key Advantage Over Real Madrid and Barcelona

Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to re-sign 21-year-old defender Alvaro Fernandez from Benfica, with their buy-back clause giving them an upper hand over Real Madrid and Barcelona. Fernandez, who spent his formative years in Real Madrid’s youth academy, initially moved to Manchester United in 2020 but failed to break into the first team. He was subsequently sold to Benfica last summer after a loan stint with the Portuguese side.

This season, Fernandez has impressed for Benfica, making nine appearances across all competitions, including the Champions League. His performances have caught the attention of several top European clubs, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both showing interest in bringing him back to Spain.

However, Manchester United hold a crucial advantage. They included a buy-back clause in the deal when Fernandez moved to Benfica, which allows them to re-sign the young left-back.

With ongoing issues at left-back, including long-term injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, the Red Devils may trigger this option next summer as they seek a long-term solution to their defensive problemsFernandez’s rise to prominence follows a loan spell at Preston North End during the 2022-23 season. While he struggled to make an impact on loan at Granada, his form at Benfica has significantly improved, making him a hot prospect in the transfer market.

With Manchester United facing a shortage of left-sided defenders, re-signing Fernandez could provide stability in the long term. The club has also been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell, but Fernandez’s return could be seen as the more cost-effective and promising solution.

As the competition for his signature heats up, Manchester United are well-positioned to bring Fernandez back to Old Trafford, a move that would address their pressing defensive needs.
