Flick announces his lack of confidence in one of Barcelona’s stars, he will not play for Barcelona again
Barcelona is gearing up for a crucial Champions League match tomorrow against Bayern Munich in the tournament’s third round. German coach Hansi Flick, familiar with Bayern, aims to secure a vital win against a team that has often challenged Barcelona in recent years.
According to the Spanish newspaper “El Nacional,” Iñaki Peña’s last start for Barcelona in La Liga was against Sevilla, where Flick unexpectedly chose him over Wojciech Szczesny. However, Peña’s performance was disappointing; he failed to keep a clean sheet despite limited chances from Sevilla, appearing nervous and unable to instill confidence.
Although he could have capitalized on Marc-André ter Stegen’s serious injury, Peña has shown he isn’t ready for such responsibilities. His future at Camp Nou now looks bleak. With the recent addition of the Polish international, Peña will likely return to the bench and play in less significant matches like the Copa del Rey. Meanwhile, the former players from Roma, Brentford, Arsenal, and Juventus is still not fully fit but has more experience, earning Flick’s trust as the starting goalkeeper.
He is anticipated to make his debut in the upcoming match against Real Madrid during the eleventh round of La Liga, marking the first Clásico of the season. Flick had concerns about Iñaki, but these have now been addressed. It has become evident during his recent play that he is not suitable to back up the first-team captain, and his future with Barcelona appears uncertain.
The club will entertain all offers for him, including those that may come in January. Joan Laporta and Deco have already started exploring the possibility of bringing in a new goalkeeper soon.
