Barcelona ‘line up shock move for Arsenal star’ who is ‘expected to leave’ in 2025
Barcelona is reportedly considering a surprise move for an Arsenal player who is anticipated to leave in 2025, as he is “unlikely” to sign a new contract at the Emirates.
Arsenal has started the season strongly, currently sitting third in the Premier League. New signings David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori have impressed fans, while Mikel Merino is still working to establish himself, having only played two matches due to a shoulder injury. However, he is expected to play a larger role after the international break, having recently demonstrated his fitness during Spain’s 1-0 victory over Denmark, where he featured for 30 minutes.
Merino’s arrival has led to speculation regarding Thomas Partey’s future, as his contract expires at the end of the season. Reports suggest he is unlikely to be offered an extension, which would allow him to negotiate a pre-contract with clubs outside England in January.
Spanish outlet Sport states that Barcelona could be a possible destination for Partey, with new head coach Hansi Flick reportedly interested. The club had shown interest last summer, but Mikel Arteta decided to keep him.
Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 and has made 124 appearances. Last season, he faced several injuries, limiting him to just 16 matches, but he has been more active this season, participating in nine games so far.
If he were to join Barcelona, he might play a supporting role, but his experience could benefit younger players like Pedri, Gavi, and Marc Casado.
After Arsenal’s 2-0 win against PSG on October 1, Mikel Arteta highlighted Partey’s significance to the team, stating, “He’s shown good performances week in and week out. The way he came back after the holidays was probably the best condition he’s been in. Now it’s about managing him, and he’s done really well.”
Additionally, clubs like Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and several Saudi Arabian teams have shown interest in Partey. Although Juventus initially considered him, their recent acquisitions of midfielders make a transfer for Partey less likely.
