Fans watching Barcelona vs. Bayern Munich game are making the same point about Manuel Neuer

Manuel Neuer will go down in history as one of the all-time great goalkeepers; there’s no doubting that.

Manuel Neuer, 38, announced his retirement from international football in August after earning 124 caps for Germany. He is already considered a legend at Bayern Munich, having won 11 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies.

His achievements are impressive. From 2013 to 2016, he was named the World’s Best Goalkeeper by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics for four consecutive years, adding a fifth title in 2020. In the 2015/16 season, he set a Bundesliga record with 21 clean sheets and had an unbeaten streak of 48 games from November 2012 to March 2014, the longest in history for any goalkeeper.

However, on Wednesday night, Neuer, who holds the record for the most appearances by a German goalkeeper, had one of the worst performances of his career. He made several errors at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys as Barcelona secured a 4-1 victory, with goals from Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. Bayern struggled from the beginning after Raphinha easily rounded Neuer to score.

It was a challenging evening for the seasoned keeper, who received a career-low FotMob rating of 3.0.

Fans on social media had mixed reactions, with one commenting, “It breaks my heart to say this, but Neuer looks washed up,” and another saying, “It’s sad to see Neuer in this state, especially when others still defend him.” A third fan expressed frustration, stating, “Neuer can’t stop a shot to save his life; we’re being embarrassed by Barcelona.” Another pointed out that while Neuer is one of Bayern’s top players, “we need to accept he’s past his prime and doesn’t deserve £20m.” Lastly, one fan remarked, “That was one of the worst games I’ve ever seen from Neuer.”
