Xavi asked to sign Barcelona duo to coach Manchester United, and Flick’s decision ended the matter
Recently, speculation has grown about Xavi Hernandez potentially taking over as manager of Manchester United. The pressure at Old Trafford has intensified following the firing of Erik ten Hag, and the United board is eager to avoid further setbacks this season.
Xavi has emerged as a leading candidate among various alternatives. According to the Spanish outlet “El Nacional,” he is intrigued by United’s project and excited about the prospect of managing such a historic club with passionate supporters.
Reports suggest that Xavi has had preliminary discussions with United management regarding the possibility of bringing two Barcelona players—Fermin Lopez and Andreas Christensen—whom he considers crucial to his plans. Both players performed well under Xavi at Barcelona, with Lopez, a promising academy product, earning particular praise for his determination and winning mindset. Xavi has previously expressed a strong admiration for Lopez, even stating he would “go to war with him.”
Christensen, who joined from Chelsea, became an essential figure in the defense during Xavi’s tenure. However, Xavi’s hopes were dashed when German coach Hansi Flick refused to release either player, ultimately leading Xavi to turn down the Manchester United offer. Consequently, United has shifted its focus to Portuguese coach Rubén Amorim.
