Goodbye Barcelona… Nico Williams decides to leave Athletic Bilbao and join this surprise team
Nico Williams is back in the spotlight regarding his future. Last summer, he surprised many by choosing to stay with Athletic Bilbao despite attractive offers, including one from Barcelona, which had nearly secured his transfer. Ultimately, he decided to continue under Ernesto Valverde. However, recent reports from El Nacional suggest that he has started to regret his decision, feeling it was a mistake due to inconsistent performances at San Mamés and the exciting opportunities presented by Hansi Flick’s project.
Barcelona is currently seen as a serious contender for multiple titles, but Joan Laporta and Deco appear to have lost interest in signing Williams. He has been warned that such chances are rare, leading him to realize he missed the opportunity to play for Barcelona.
With Rafinha performing well, the club has opted not to pursue Williams, even with a reasonable asking price of 58 million euros. Nevertheless, several teams are still interested, and Williams has indicated that he is nearing the end of his time at Athletic Bilbao.
He plans to leave in 2025 to seek a new challenge with a more ambitious club, aiming to compete for titles, participate in the Champions League, and secure a higher salary. Liverpool, under Arne Slot, is a potential destination, especially as they may need a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who is set to become a free agent amid links to PSG and the Saudi Professional League.
Williams is intrigued by the idea of joining Anfield and possibly taking over Salah’s position, although his primary desire remains to play for Barcelona. However, he understands that Laporta and Deco are no longer interested in him.
