Kylian Mbappé No Longer the Captain of the French National Team?

Kylian Mbappé’s future as captain of the French national team is being questioned after Didier Deschamps sidelined him for France’s upcoming matches against Israel and Italy. Despite Mbappé’s expressed desire to play, the coach decided to leave him out, suggesting that it was in the team’s best interest. Some have speculated that this absence could be a form of punishment, possibly linked to Mbappé’s decision to refuse joining the team last October.

The question now arises: Could Mbappé lose the captain’s armband for good when he returns to the squad in March? Having taken over as captain after Hugo Lloris’ retirement post-2022 World Cup, Mbappé has faced scrutiny about whether the responsibility is too much for him. Some critics have raised doubts about his ability to lead, with former French international Bixente Lizarazu questioning whether he is psychologically ready to shoulder the burden of the role.

Lizarazu, speaking on Téléfoot, said: “Is he psychologically ready to be captain? The captaincy requires being focused on others, possessing serenity and authority—traits that he doesn’t always seem to have.” Pierre Bouby, speaking on La Chaîne L’Equipe, also commented on Mbappé’s behavior since becoming captain, suggesting that his recent decisions—like refusing to join the national team—raise concerns. “When a captain is at 100% but chooses not to come, it creates a problem, especially when he takes control and Didier Deschamps seems to follow his lead,” Bouby said.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Mbappé will retain his leadership role with the Blues or if the armband will pass to another player.
