Enzo Fernández, the record-breaking Chelsea player whose future at Stamford Bridge is becoming increasingly uncertain, is being courted by two European giants in an ambitious attempt to sign him.
Fernández was not a starter in Chelsea’s Premier League match against Manchester United last weekend. Romeo Lavia and Moisés Caicedo were chosen by manager Mauricio Pochettino because he believed they were in better form. This decision raised serious concerns about Fernández’s future with the team.
The 2022 World Cup champion is determined to regain his starting position at Chelsea, according to sources close to the team. However, rumors suggest that if he is no longer needed at Stamford Bridge, he has no plans to remain on the bench for months. As a result, two of Europe’s top clubs, Inter Milan and Barcelona, are closely monitoring his health status.
Since Chelsea acquired the midfielder from Benfica in 2023 for a British record of £107 million, Fernández has faced criticism.
“Fernández should never play again for Chelsea,” said TalkSPORT presenter Rory Jennings, who also suggested he could be the “worst” signing in Premier League history.
However, coach Enzo Maresca has openly shown empathy for Fernández’s struggles in justifying the significant fee Chelsea paid for him, particularly in light of recent changes in his personal life.
Despite having a daughter and son together, the 23-year-old is now living on his own after recently separating from his childhood love, Valentina Cervantes.
“They’re human, and it’s not my problem if you pay £100 million,” Maresca stated before Chelsea’s match last weekend. “You have to spend that much if you want to buy me. But you don’t have to be the best player in every match.”
“You can’t always be at your best. They’re just football players,” Maresca continued. “Although Enzo isn’t playing right now, there’s nothing wrong with that.
Teams spend a lot of money on them, and people expect them to be the best. Enzo is a topic of much discussion. But that’s not true. Romeo Lavia and Moisés Caicedo are physically more prepared, and that’s the only reason he’s not playing,” the Italian coach concluded.
