Dembele scenario is repeated again: The player refuses to renew his contract with Barça and is secretly negotiating with Paris Saint-Germain to leave for free
Barcelona is preparing for a repeat of the Ousmane Dembélé situation, as another key player is rejecting all contract extension offers from the club’s management, led by Joan Laporta and Deco. This player is seeking to leave in search of a more lucrative financial deal, similar to Dembélé’s move.
Despite lengthy talks about a new deal, Dembélé turned down Barcelona’s offers and used his €50 million release clause to transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. There, Nasser Al-Khelaifi promised him a generous salary, while manager Luis Enrique played a role in convincing him to make the move, which had a negative impact on Barcelona.
Now, El Nacional reports that the same situation could be happening with Frenkie de Jong. His contract runs through 2026, and he is the club’s highest-paid player. Although he was initially expected to agree to an extension with a pay reduction, he has strongly rejected that offer.
This is becoming a serious concern for Barcelona, with rumors suggesting De Jong may already be in discussions with other clubs and could have an informal agreement in place. Laporta and Deco are eager to avoid another free transfer, especially since the club paid over €85 million for him from Ajax just five years ago.
Paris Saint-Germain, who benefitted from Dembélé’s exit, is closely monitoring De Jong’s situation. The player is aware that a free transfer would lead to a higher salary and a significant signing bonus, and Al-Khelaifi could once again exploit Barcelona’s struggles, as he did with Neymar and Messi.
