Samuel Umtiti reportedly considering retirement at 31
Samuel Umtiti, the former Barcelona defender, is reportedly contemplating retirement at 31 due to persistent knee issues. The French player has been battling chronic knee problems, which have resurfaced and affected his ability to play in recent years.
In 2024, Umtiti has made just one appearance after undergoing two knee surgeries—one in February and another in August.
His contract with Lille is set to expire next summer, and the French club is said to be planning to part ways with him.
Umtiti’s time at Barcelona once showed great promise, but knee issues have hindered his career since he postponed surgery to compete in the 2018 World Cup, where he helped France secure the title.
Barcelona has sent a clear message to Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong about whether to renew their contracts or leave.
