How to play the NBA quiz
Press Play the quiz to get ten random questions from the 50 above. The final screen shows your score out of ten and the ones you missed. “Play again” brings ten different questions, and your best score is kept on your device.
Use the topic menu to focus on Records, Champions, Legends and coaches, or Rules and history. Question list shows every question with a “Show answer” toggle, a “Reveal all answers” button and two print options.
How to run NBA trivia at a watch party
NBA games have natural breaks, which makes them good for trivia. Try this:
- One question per timeout. Read a question at each timeout of the first half; teams write their answer before play restarts. These are worth 1 point each.
- A ten-question halftime round from one topic, with 30 seconds each.
- Scoring: 2 points for a correct answer, 3 points for a Records question, like a two and a three.
- Free-throw tie-breaker: if teams are level, ask a numeric question such as Wilt Chamberlain’s career rebounds (23,924). Closest answer wins.
Keep the explanations handy when you read the answers. “Hakeem went first, Sam Bowie second, Jordan third” settles the 1984 draft argument before it starts.
Worked example: a halftime round
Take five Champions questions and five Records questions. At 2 and 3 points that is 5 × 2 + 5 × 3 = 25 points available. A team that gets four Champions questions and two Records questions right scores 8 + 6 = 14. Add a point per timeout question answered correctly in the first half; with eight timeouts that adds up to 8 more points, so the best possible total is 33.
How the questions were chosen
We wanted NBA trivia that will still be correct years from now, so every question rests on a fact that cannot change:
- Championships and Finals MVPs from seasons that are over.
- Records by retired players (John Stockton’s assists, Wilt Chamberlain’s rebounds) or single-season marks tied to their season (Curry’s 402 threes in 2015–16, the 73–9 Warriors).
- League rules and history: 12-minute quarters, six fouls to foul out, the 24-second shot clock from 1954, the three-point line from 1979–80, franchise moves like Seattle to Oklahoma City.
We left out anything about current rosters, contracts, coaches or the active players’ career totals. Every question has one correct answer, and the three wrong options are real players, teams or numbers that a fan could believe.
How we tested
The quiz runs on one small engine, and we wrote automated Node tests for it (tests/quiz.test.js) and ran them before publishing. They read the question list straight from this page's source and check that:
- all 50 questions have a unique id and no question appears twice;
- every question has exactly four different options, and the correct answer is one of them;
- a round always contains 10 different questions, and a second round avoids the questions from the first while enough are left;
- after the options are shuffled, the engine still knows which button is right: in 600 test rounds (6,000 shuffled questions) per quiz the correct answer landed in each of the four positions about a quarter of the time, and was always the one marked correct;
- the score counts only right answers (all right gives 10/10, all wrong gives 0/10, and answering the same question twice is ignored).
Facts were checked separately. The questions come from well-documented NBA history. Exact figures were checked against web sources before we kept them: John Stockton’s 15,806 assists and 3,265 steals (NBA.com), Wilt Chamberlain’s 23,924 career rebounds and Dennis Rodman’s seven straight rebounding titles from 1991–92 to 1997–98 (Wikipedia lists and NBA coverage).
Every question was then reviewed a second time in a separate fact-check pass, and the details we doubted were checked against Wikipedia and news reports. That pass updated one explanation: Kobe Bryant’s 81 points is no longer the second-highest NBA total, because Bam Adebayo scored 83 in March 2026.
Those are the only tests we ran: we have not tried the quiz with groups of players or on a range of phones, so if something looks wrong, please tell us.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn’t LeBron James the answer to every record question?
Because he is still adding to his totals, so a question like “who has the most career points?” would only be right until he retires. We ask about the moment he passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in February 2023 instead, which can never change.
Which era does the quiz cover?
From the league’s founding in 1946 to the 2010s, with a few fixed-date questions after that. There is a good spread of 1960s Celtics, 1980s Magic and Bird, 1990s Bulls and 2010s Warriors.
Can I make the quiz harder?
Choose “Records” in the menu. Those questions ask for exact numbers like Stephen Curry’s 402 threes in 2015–16, and the wrong options are close.
Will I get the same questions every time?
Not until you have seen them all. The quiz remembers which questions you played recently on this device and deals new ones first.
