How to play the Premier League quiz
Press Play the quiz for ten random questions from the 50 above. Pick one of four answers and you see at once if you were right, with a short explanation of the fact behind it. At the end you get a score out of ten and a list of the questions you missed. “Play again” deals ten new questions, so five rounds cover the whole set.
Switch to Question list to see every question with the answer tucked away under “Show answer”. You can reveal them one by one, reveal all, or print the sheet with or without answers.
Running a Premier League round at a quiz night
The 50 questions are split into four topics, which makes it easy to build a themed football quiz Premier League fans will enjoy without the questions all feeling the same:
- Round 1 – Title races (10 questions). A gentle start: who won which title and under which manager.
- Round 2 – Players (10). Golden Boots, record signings of the 1990s and famous moments.
- Round 3 – Records and firsts (10). The hard one, with exact numbers. Give a bonus point for an exact number and accept nothing else.
- Picture or music break if you have one, while you mark.
- Tie-breaker – keep back one numeric question, for example how many points Derby County finished with in 2007–08 (11). Nearest answer wins.
Read each question twice and allow 30 seconds. Teams swap sheets for marking while you read the answers and the explanations, which usually head off any arguments about Agüero, Cantona or Vardy.
Worked example: scoring a team
Use 1 point for title races and players, and 2 points for records. Over three rounds of ten that gives a maximum of 10 + 10 + 20 = 40. A team scoring 7, 6 and then 4 records questions right finishes on 7 + 6 + 8 = 21 points. If two teams tie on 21, the tie-breaker decides it: a team that guesses 12 points for Derby beats one that guesses 15, because 12 is one away from the real answer of 11 and 15 is four away.
How the questions were chosen
The Premier League changes every weekend, so a quiz about it goes stale fast unless you are careful. We used these rules:
- Finished seasons only. Champions, relegations and Golden Boots from seasons that are over.
- Records with a date attached. “In 2022–23, Erling Haaland set a new record. How many?” stays true even if someone scores more later. We avoided “who holds the record?” for any record an active player could still break.
- No transfer gossip, no current managers. Those facts are true for a few months at best.
- Plausible wrong answers. The three wrong options are players, clubs or numbers from the same era, never jokes.
The topics run from 1992–93, when Manchester United won the first title and Brian Deane scored the first goal, to Manchester City’s fourth title in a row in 2023–24.
How we tested
The quiz runs on one small engine, and we wrote automated Node tests for it (tests/quiz.test.js) and ran them before publishing. They read the question list straight from this page's source and check that:
- all 50 questions have a unique id and no question appears twice;
- every question has exactly four different options, and the correct answer is one of them;
- a round always contains 10 different questions, and a second round avoids the questions from the first while enough are left;
- after the options are shuffled, the engine still knows which button is right: in 600 test rounds (6,000 shuffled questions) per quiz the correct answer landed in each of the four positions about a quarter of the time, and was always the one marked correct;
- the score counts only right answers (all right gives 10/10, all wrong gives 0/10, and answering the same question twice is ignored).
Facts were checked separately. This is the section where exact numbers matter most, so we checked the record figures against the Premier League records page on Wikipedia and contemporary match reports before including them: among others Petr Čech’s 202 clean sheets, Chelsea conceding 15 goals in 2004–05, Derby’s 11 points, Shane Long’s 7.69-second goal, Sadio Mané’s 2 min 56 s hat-trick, Jamie Vardy’s 11 games in a row, Teddy Sheringham’s 22 goals in 1992–93 and Gareth Barry passing Ryan Giggs’s 632 appearances in September 2017.
Every question was then reviewed a second time in a separate fact-check pass, and the details we doubted were checked against Wikipedia and news reports.
Those are the only tests we ran: we have not tried the quiz with groups of players or on a range of phones, so if something looks wrong, please tell us.
Frequently asked questions
Does the quiz include the current season?
No. Every question is about a season that has finished, or is phrased with a fixed date, so the answers stay right however the current season goes. Questions like “who is the all-time top scorer?” are asked as “who retired in 2006 with 260 goals?” instead.
Which season does the Premier League count from?
The 1992–93 season, when the clubs of the old First Division broke away from the Football League. Titles won before that, such as Leeds United’s in 1991–92, are First Division titles.
How hard is this quiz?
The Title races and Players questions are about famous moments most fans will remember. The Records and firsts questions, with exact numbers like Derby’s 11 points, are the hardest.
Can I play only one topic?
Yes. Choose a topic in the menu, such as “Title races” or “Players”, and the quiz draws only from that group. The question list follows the same choice, which helps if you want a themed round.
