How to choose a bowling team name

Where your bowling team name appears

For league bowlers, the name goes on the overhead lane monitors, the printed or emailed standings sheet, the league’s recap each week and often on matching shirts. For a one-off outing, it is typed in at the front desk and shown on your lane screen. Shirts are a big part of bowling culture: a short name can be stitched or printed across the back in large letters, while a long one has to shrink.

Bowling has its own vocabulary, and using it shows your team actually bowls:

        How we tested

We wrote and reviewed every name by hand. An automated Node test then reads this page’s list and checks that no bowling team name appears twice (ignoring capitals and punctuation), that none is longer than 30 characters, and that all five styles have names. It runs the 10-name generator 1,000 times on this list and checks that every set has exactly 10 different names, checks that each style filter returns only that style, and runs the bowling mixer 800 times with and without a captain name and town, checking every result is unique and within the limit. HTML typed into the boxes is shown as plain text, not run. We have not checked how each bowling center’s scoring system displays long names.

        Frequently asked questions

Can we change our bowling team name mid-season?

Ask your league secretary. Many leagues allow it, but the name is entered into the center’s scoring system and the league standings, and some secretaries prefer to change it only between seasons so the records stay easy to follow.

What do turkey, Brooklyn and bedposts mean?

A turkey is three strikes in a row. A Brooklyn is a strike where the ball hits the opposite pocket (the 1-2 pocket for a right-handed bowler). Bedposts is the nickname for the 7-10 split, the two back corner pins. These terms give your team name an insider feel that casual bowlers still find funny.

What is a good name for a kids’ bowling party?

Use the family-friendly filter: names like “Bowlosaurus Rex”, “Bumpers Up” and “Glow Bowl Crew” are easy for children to read on the lane screen. Generate one set of 10 per lane and let each group of kids pick theirs.

Is a perfect game in bowling really 300?

Yes. A perfect game is 12 strikes in a row: one in each of the first nine frames and three in the tenth. Each strike scores 10 plus the next two balls, so every frame is worth 30 and ten frames make 300. That is why “300 Club” style names are about the dream, not the average night.
