How to use the name generator
- Choose a style: Funny, Clever puns, Cool, Tough or Family-friendly, or leave it on All.
- Press Generate 10 names. You get 10 different names from the list on this page, in random order. Press again for a new set.
- Want something nobody else has? Type a teammate’s first name or your town into Build your own and press Mix 10 names.
- Press ☆ Save on the ones you like. Your shortlist stays in this browser, so you can paste it into the group chat and let the team vote.
For example, typing “Dave” and “Maple Street” gives mixes such as “Dave’s Comeback Tour”, “Blame It on Dave” and “Pride of Maple Street”, next to plain combinations like “The Midnight Otters”.
How to pick a team name that works
Most funny team names are only funny once. The ones teams keep for years pass four quick checks:
- Say it out loud. Someone will shout it across a field or read it into a microphone. If it takes two breaths or the joke only works in writing, choose another.
- Keep it short. Two to four words is the sweet spot. “Vortex” and “Sore Winners” are easy to remember; a full sentence is not.
- Read the league rules first. Many rec, school and company leagues ban profanity, innuendo and alcohol references, and the organizer can rename a team that ignores that. If children, parents or the CEO will see the standings, start with the family-friendly list.
- Laugh at yourselves, not at others. The safest jokes are about your own lack of skill (“Not Last Place Yet”) or your shared job (“The Reply-All Disasters”). Names that mock a group of people, a body type or a colleague get remembered for the wrong reasons.
Funny or cool: which suits your team?
Funny names win for one-off events, office leagues and trivia, where nobody takes the result too seriously. Cool team names suit a team that trains, wants to look sharp on a shirt or plays in a competitive division. A simple rule: if you would be happy to see the name on a trophy, it is cool; if you would be happy to see it on the bottom of the table, it is funny.
Where your team name will appear
Think about the places your name has to fit before you vote:
- Scoreboards and league apps. Many displays cut names off after a set number of characters, and the limit varies by system. We kept every name on this page at 30 characters or fewer; if your venue’s screen is smaller, check before you register.
- Standings and fixture lists. Long names get shortened or wrap onto two lines. A name that still makes sense when cut short, such as “Silver Bullets”, survives this better.
- Shirts. Printers usually charge by size and color, not by letter, but a short name can be printed bigger and read from further away.
- The group chat. You will type it a hundred times. Punctuation such as “Excel-erators” looks clever but is easy to mistype.
Tips for writing your own puns
- Start from a phrase everyone knows, then swap one word for something about your team: “Sweet dreams” becomes “Sweat Dreams”.
- Food puns are the easiest clean jokes: lettuce for “let us”, taco for “talk”, gouda for “good”.
- Swap one sound, not three. The listener should get it in a second.
- Avoid puns that only work with a strong accent or by misspelling a word on purpose.
- Check what the pun sounds like when shouted. Some innocent names turn rude when said fast.
How we tested
We wrote and reviewed every name by hand, then ran an automated test (Node) on the list and the generator code. The test reads the list straight from this page and checks that no name appears twice, even with different capitals or punctuation, and that no name is longer than 30 characters. It also checks that “Generate 10 names” returns exactly 10 different names in 1,000 runs, that each style filter returns only names of that style, and that the mixer returns 10 different names of 30 characters or fewer with and without a teammate name. A name typed as HTML code, such as <b>Dave</b>, is shown as plain text, not run as code. We have not tested the page with real teams or leagues.

Frequently asked questions
Can we use these names for free?
Yes. The names on this page are our own wordplay or general puns on everyday phrases, and you can use them for a league sign-up, a group chat or a printed shirt. The one thing to avoid is copying the exact name and logo of a real professional club for merchandise you sell.
What is the difference between a funny name and a cool one?
A funny name makes people smile when the announcer reads it, usually by poking fun at your own team (“Slightly Above Average”). A cool name sounds like something you would see on a real scoreboard: one or two strong words such as “Nightfall” or “Silver Bullets”. Cool names age better if the team stays together for years.
Is a funny team name OK for a work league?
Usually yes, as long as the joke is about your own team or your job and not about a colleague, a client or another department. Names like “Unpaid Overtime” or “Out of Office” land well because everyone shares the joke. If HR or the league organizer will read it aloud, use the family-friendly filter.
Another team in our league already has our name. What now?
Add something only you have: your town, street, office floor or captain’s name. Type it into “Build your own” and the mixer will make versions such as “Pride of Maple Street”. Most leagues register names first come, first served, so send yours in early.
