Jorge Mendes offers the octopus goalkeeper to Hansi Flick, he is better than Ter Stegen and Iñaki Pena
The transfer market remains active for the renowned agent Jorge Mendes, who has now proposed a controversial name to Barcelona: Diogo Costa, the current Porto goalkeeper, regarded as one of Europe’s top young talents. Mendes, who fully believes in Costa’s abilities, views him as the perfect addition to a club like Barcelona and has presented the idea to the club’s sporting director, Deco.
However, the situation is not straightforward. At present, Barcelona does not plan to acquire a goalkeeper soon. Although Costa is considered one of the best young goalkeepers, praised for his quick reflexes, excellent footwork, and penalty-saving skills, the club trusts its current goalkeepers: Iñaki Peña and veteran Marc-André ter Stegen.
Despite this, Mendes is confident that Costa would be a significant upgrade. The 25-year-old goalkeeper from Porto has substantial experience in European competitions and has been a vital player for the Portuguese national team in crucial moments. His statistics are impressive, leading the Portuguese league in save percentage, in addition to his strong ability to start play from goal—an attribute that aligns with Barcelona’s playing style.
The main hurdle to a deal, however, lies in the financial aspect. Costa is contracted with Porto until 2027, with a release clause of approximately €75 million. For Barcelona, which is still dealing with Financial Fair Play constraints, this sum presents a significant challenge.
Although Mendes’ proposal is enticing, Barcelona does not intend to rush any decisions. Deco has taken note of the offer, but the priority remains to strengthen other areas of the team. In the meantime, Peña will continue to have the chance to prove himself as a reliable option, and there is full confidence that Ter Stegen will regain his top form.
For now, the door remains open for Costa to join Barcelona, but no action will be taken in the near future. Mendes’ offer remains under consideration, waiting for the right circumstances.
