Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘wants two things from Liverpool’ to reject Real Madrid move and sign new contract
Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly made two demands to Liverpool in order to reject a move to Real Madrid this summer.
The 26-year-old’s contract expires in the summer, and his future has become a major topic of discussion during the January transfer window.
On New Year’s Eve, Paul Joyce from The Times reported that Liverpool turned down a £20 million bid from Real Madrid for Alexander-Arnold, with the Champions League holders eager to secure his signature before the summer.
This offer is significantly lower than what Liverpool would expect if the right-back were under a long-term contract. The fact that a bid was made, especially considering Real can sign him for free in the summer, shows their strong interest in finalizing the deal early.
In December, The Liverpool Echo mentioned that Alexander-Arnold had not expressed a desire to leave Anfield, and it seems Liverpool are still working to persuade him to remain at the club.
Ben Jacobs revealed that Alexander-Arnold has outlined two conditions for agreeing to an extension. On talkSPORT, Jacobs stated: “While Trent isn’t open to a mid-season move, what he wants from Liverpool in exchange for an extension is a contract lasting at least three years, and eventually, to become the club’s captain.”
It’s worth monitoring whether discussions regarding Virgil van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold are connected. If Trent is promised the captaincy in the future, it could have an effect on Van Dijk.
“As of now, it seems that Liverpool is more optimistic about Van Dijk and Salah staying, while Trent Alexander-Arnold’s situation remains uncertain,” one source noted.
SPORTbible has reached out to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s representatives for comment.
The Athletic reported last month that Liverpool had made new contract offers to the trio of Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, and Salah, who are all approaching the end of their contracts.
However, after Liverpool’s 5-0 win over West Ham, Salah—currently the Premier League’s top scorer with 17 goals and 13 assists—wasn’t very forthcoming about his future. He told Sky Sports: “We are far away from that [agreeing on a new contract]. But again, I don’t want to make any comments that will spark rumors. Nothing has really changed, and I’m focused on the team.”Van Dijk has also avoided addressing speculation about his contract talks, although David Ornstein reports that the general sentiment at Anfield is that both Van Dijk and Salah will eventually agree to new deals.
