Barcelona and Messi: No Farewell Match Planned as Relationship With the Board Remains Damaged

A new development has reopened one of the most sensitive chapters in Barcelona’s modern history, but the surprise this time is not about a player on the pitch. Instead, it concerns how the story of one of the greatest legends in the club’s history could eventually come to an end. With Lionel Messi entering the final stages of his career, many expected preparations for a farewell worthy of his legacy to begin, but the reality inside Barcelona appears to be very different.

Barcelona are currently not planning a tribute match or an official farewell event for Messi, despite renewed speculation over a celebration for the club legend. Behind the current position is a relationship between Messi and the Barcelona board that remains damaged, with the roots of the situation dating back to the way his time at the club ended.

According to exclusive information provided to Barça Universal by journalist Adrian Sanchez, Barcelona currently have no plans to organise an official tribute or farewell match for Lionel Messi.

The development comes despite Messi’s extraordinary standing in Barcelona’s history. His departure in 2021, however, left a wound that has never completely healed.

The split between Barcelona and Messi was not a sporting decision. The club were unable to renew his contract because of La Liga’s financial regulations and wage restrictions. Although Joan Laporta had campaigned on a promise to keep the Argentine at Camp Nou, Barcelona ultimately could not register the new agreement.

Barcelona eventually withdrew the contract offer, forcing Messi to leave the club and join Paris Saint-Germain in one of the most painful departures in the club’s recent history.

The fallout also affected Messi’s relationship with Laporta. The Barcelona president previously acknowledged that their relationship was no longer what it once was, while also recalling an awkward encounter between the two at a Ballon d’Or ceremony.

That history helps explain why arranging an official farewell for Messi remains a complicated issue, despite Barcelona continuing to recognise his importance to the club.

Speculation about a potential tribute match had resurfaced earlier this year, particularly amid discussions about Messi potentially returning to Camp Nou once the stadium renovation project is completed.

Laporta had previously indicated that Messi could receive a major tribute in the future and even said that the Argentine deserves a statue at Camp Nou. He also suggested that the most appropriate moment for a major celebration could come once the stadium renovation is complete and the venue can welcome its full capacity.

However, the latest information indicates that those ideas have not turned into a formal plan at this stage. There are currently no arrangements in place for a farewell match or official Messi tribute in Barcelona.

That does not necessarily mean the idea of honouring Messi has been abandoned forever. Barcelona still recognise him as a club legend, while the possibility of the relationship improving in the future has not been completely ruled out.

For now, however, Barcelona’s position is clear: there is no farewell match or official tribute for Messi currently being prepared. The club could revisit the issue in the future, particularly once the Camp Nou renovation is completed and relations between the two sides improve.
