Yan Diomande’s start at Real Madrid has not unfolded quite as many expected, despite the huge attention surrounding his arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu and the significant investment made by the club. As the matches have gone by, questions have begun to emerge over the deal, but this time they have come from a figure with a deep understanding of Real Madrid rather than simply from the stands or the player’s performances.
The biggest question came from former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santi Canizares, who raised doubts over the Diomande operation and connected it to another highly sensitive issue at the club involving Vinicius Junior and his contract situation. The suggestion has sparked debate, although there is no evidence proving a direct connection between the two matters.
Real Madrid made a major financial investment to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig during the summer transfer window. However, the 19-year-old Ivorian has yet to receive the amount of playing time some expected, starting only one of the six possible matches so far.
Canizares believes Diomande should primarily be judged on his age and potential rather than the price Real Madrid paid for him. In the former goalkeeper’s view, it is far too early to expect a 19-year-old to immediately display the personality of a global superstar or carry the burden associated with such a huge transfer fee.
Canizares also stressed that Diomande needs time to develop and prove himself, arguing that judging him after only a handful of appearances would be unfair. He pointed to Real Madrid’s history, noting that young players rarely establish themselves immediately at the club, with Vinicius Junior himself needing significant development before becoming one of Madrid’s leading stars.
The most controversial part of Canizares’ comments, however, concerned the circumstances surrounding the transfer. He pointed out that Diomande and Vinicius Junior are represented by the same agency and raised the possibility that the circumstances surrounding Vinicius’ contract renewal may have played a role in the way the Ivorian’s move to Madrid was handled.
There is no evidence proving that Real Madrid paid such a significant amount because of negotiations over Vinicius’ renewal. Therefore, this remains a theory or question raised by Canizares rather than an established fact. However, the shared agency has provided the basis for that interpretation, particularly given the sensitivity surrounding Vinicius’ contract situation.
At the same time, Canizares made it clear that Diomande himself should not be held responsible for the transfer fee. The player had no control over the negotiations that led Real Madrid to invest €140 million in his signing. As a result, the pressure created by the transfer fee should not become a psychological burden for a player who is still at the beginning of his career.
Real Madrid now face the challenge of protecting their investment in Diomande and providing him with the right environment to develop, rather than allowing the transfer fee to become the main standard by which every appearance is judged. The teenager has already shown flashes of his potential, but he still needs time and work to reach the level expected of him.
The situation becomes even more interesting when Diomande is compared with Vinicius, who also needed time to develop before becoming one of Real Madrid’s most important players. Diomande’s limited start therefore does not necessarily indicate that the transfer has been a failure, but it does underline the need for Madrid to treat him as a talented 19-year-old rather than as a finished superstar simply because of his transfer fee.
Ultimately, the biggest question is whether Diomande’s arrival was simply a long-term investment in a highly talented young player, or whether circumstances surrounding Vinicius’ contract situation were also present behind the scenes. For now, there is no evidence confirming the second scenario, but Canizares’ comments have reopened the debate surrounding one of Real Madrid’s most intriguing recent deals.
